Full description
The synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Moorish Revival style according to the plans of Ludwig Förster. The interior of the synagogue is 1200 square metres, designed by Frigyes Feszl. Its size (which ranks second in the world) proves the historic importance of Budapest Jewry in the capital, and its high economic and cultural needs.
The complex consists of the Great Synagogue, the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, the Memorial and the Jewish Museum. The museum hosts a collection of religious relics, ritual objects of Shabbat and the High Holidays and a Holocaust room.
